Effexor is an arylalkanolamine SNRI is a drug that treats major depression, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder and it was the sixth most commonly prescribed antidepressant drug. In treating depression, this drug works similarly with tricyclic antidepressants amitriptyline and imipramine. At higher doses, it is effective and more patients achieved remissions. This drug is distributed with pentagon-shaped peach-colored tablets with 25 mg, 37.5 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg respectively. There is also extended release version that is in capsule form with 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg respectively. The extended release capsule works by controlling the release of the drug in the GI tract resulting to lower peak plasma concentration. The XR version have low incidence of nausea. This drug is contraindicated in patients having hypersensitivity to venlafaxine and it should not be taken with inactive ingredients like gelatin, iron oxide, titanium and cellulose. It should be taken together with MAOI as it can cause deadly serotonin syndrome. There should be a gap of 14 days between the two drugs. There should be caution to those who have seizure disorder while taking this drug. If you have a glaucoma, it is recommended to have more frequent eye check since this drug can cause increase eye pressure. This drug is not recommended to those having heart disease and hypertension because studies showed that this drug increases heart rate and sustained high blood pressure in some cases.
The common side effects are the following: headache, insomnia, nausea, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, dry mouth and sweating.
